Rice is daily food for half of the world's population. Genetically engineered (GE) rice, on the other hand, is a threat our agriculture, our biodiversity and a possible risk to our health.

Most countries have shied away from allowing risky experimentation with the world’s most important staple crop and at present, no GE rice is grown commercially anywhere in the world. But Bayer, the German chemical giant, has genetically manipulated rice to withstand higher doses of a toxic pesticide called glufosinate, which is considered to be so dangerous to humans and the environment that it will soon be banned from Europe.

In the coming weeks, the European Union will also decide whether or not this GE rice can enter EU countries, appear on supermarket shelves and end up on our dinner plates. If the European Union approves the import of Bayer GE rice, farmers in the US (and Asia) may soon start planting the manipulated crop.

We ask all governments around the world to protect consumers and farmers, their crops and fields by rejecting Bayer’s GE rice, and to stop GE rice field trials.

im currently fixing some paperworks i need sometime in May. but then since im online, and its way past my bedtime, i need some background music to soothe the pressure and keep my head from falling.

Yesterday after work, I ate breakfast with one of my friends. I saw this ad from the Philippine Daily Inquirer and brought it home. Yes, it says "Meralco has the energy to support..."

I posted the ad page on my front lawn for passersby to see. I sms'd everyone to remind them and invite them to join the cause. And of course when the time came, I switched off all the lights at my home last night from 8:30-9:30pm.

I was expecting the street lights to dim out, but it didn't. But surprisingly, a colleague sms'd me and told me the lights were turned off at work! Wow, for a 24 hour establishment, they indeed need a time off.

Unfortunately, alot of my neighbors did not participate. Either none of them watch the news nor read the papers. Or they just simply are too lazy, too naive, too selfish and too insensitive to believe in such a world wide campaign. Or they just didn't care.

Sad. tsk tsk.. i pity them.

Yes, BTFABG (Black Tape for a Blue Girl)'s Sam Rosenthal is giving out postcards to their fans. I read this on the BTFABG Bulletin at MySpace. And I quote..

i came across an inspiring story today. and i would like to share it all with you..

A well known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20 bill.

In the room of 200, he asked, "Who would like this $20 bill?"

Hands started going up. He said, "I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this." He proceeded to crumple the dollar bill up.

He then asked, "Who still wants it?"

Still the hands were up in the air. "Well," he replied, "What if I do this?" And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now all crumpled and dirty.

"Now who still wants it?" Still the hands went into the air.

"My friends, you have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20."

Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless.

But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value.

We are all special.. You are special - Don't ever forget it!

What is LSS? - It is when having the last song you hear before leaving stick in your head all through your journey, and beyond. Is usually accompanied by subconscious humming. This syndrome is particularly dangerous when the song happens to be the most pathetic, crappy, albeit catchy song ever.

How do you cure LSS? Listen to the actual song one more time. Believe me, it works! Unless you are about to go to sleep. Hehe..

Why am I online instead of going outside and light up fireworks with everyone else? Hmm.. first, because it's raining and I find it silly for some to even fire up their rocket fireworks (some call it Dragon) despite of the rain.

Blog Action Day 2008

this is a mirror post or simultaneous post to my other blog twisted thoughts

Today marks the day of a special event in the history of the blogworld. The purpose of Blog Action Day is to create a discussion. Bloggers are asked to take a single day out of their schedule and focus it on an important issue. Last year's topic was The Environment. This year we focus on the mammoth issue of global Poverty.

Growing up, we were taught that we live in a third world country. And there are limits to what we can do and what we can get. I've always been a big dreamer when I was young and I always wanted to prove the grown ups wrong that we can only do as much. I also used to be a strong believer with the statement Kung hindi ka kikilos ngayon, kelan pa? ("If you won't act now, then when?")

Here are the facts:

The map of the world with classifications:

First (blue), Second (red), and the Third World (green) countries during the Cold War era. Does not necessarily represent a current world view.

But according to the list of third world countries, the Philippines is not included in terms of Political Rights and Civil Liberties, Gross National Income (GNI), Human Development, Poverty and Press Freedom.

There are 50 countries listed in the United Nations comparative analysis of poverty, 34 African countries, 10 Asian countries, 5 Pacific Island Nations and one Caribbean nation.

The 10 Asian third world countries are: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Laos, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Timor-Leste and Yemen.

And just recently have I encountered the term fourth world, and these are nations without states. But that's another story.

I guess, now that I have passed the age of idealism, agitated adolescence with radical actions, adding that i went through a personal dark age of my life.. time killed the passion. I remain in support and still believe the causes of course, but not as active as before.

Now joining the blog action day reminds me that time is really an issue with the long battle against poverty and change. One random act of kindness per person, when accumulated, creates change.

So I leave a question for everyone, if we won't act now, when will you? When?

A blogger's Nightmare!

i have been subscribed to a Blogger Help Group called "How Do I.." for about a year now and i only peek in once in a while. today, since there is nothing to do at work (well, im guessing the recession in the us econ is to be blamed ~ but thats another story tho).. i decided to go check on the recent queries of blogger users and see if i can help.

i found two horrifying situations today..

but let me ask you.. what's the most mortifying nightmare a blogger can have? i know you'd agree on me with this..

finding out that all your posts for more than a year have been deleted!!!

i've been blogging for almost 4 years now and if this happens to me i'd DIE! well ok that's exaggerated.. but if it cannot be recovered i just don't know what to do! what a waste of all those thoughts and ideas..

so now all my hopes are for raynie and fernando.. that they find a solution soon! nobody has replied to them at the forum yet. and i'd be on the lookout for any replies too.. (just in case something like this happens to me) *knock on wood.

i took screen shots of their messages:

OMFG!! Is it really possible to lose your blog and everything on it? according to Raynie she did not delete them and it's still searchable in the postings. so this is totally weird!

now im thinking if it shows on the google search it has got to do something with the coding platform.. and im not used to the xml template, reason why i reverted all my blogs to the older version. so i hope this would never happen to me..

the second one where the owner, fernando, admits it was deleted by accident:

i just luv my new blog template. its personal and the header are photos of places i actually took and long to be again.. with my moogie..

and now that i have a new look here i tend to pay more attention to my dropbox and my tons of drafted posts. actually, after writing this it will stay on my draft until hmm.. maybe weekend? ha!

not that it has something to do with my real walking life. (or maybe it does) but bottom line is.. give me a worthwhile questionnaire and id surely answer. and i dont need to get paid for my time. ha!

a few years back there was a survey for bloggers which of course i did not let pass, and now there is another one but this time its more on those who design their own blogs or websites.

AVG Missing .bin file

When I woke up this morning, I opened my PC and got a message from AVG that a .bin file is missing and that my PC is not protected. I had a few friends here last night so I thought they have ruined something or deleted a file without my knowledge.

But I found out from neoseeker.com few simple steps to have this resolved.

I made a couple of screen shots from my AVG user interface before and after I updated using the following steps:

1 - Start up AVG, click "Update Now".
2 - The list of updates is shown in Popup, click on the more information link. A list of updates will be shown.
3 - Click the links and save all updates in a folder except the last one named "IAVI: / 1616" [http://downloadfree.avg.com/update/u7iavi1616oo.bin] - because this is causing the problem.
4 - Cancel the update and instead click on Tools > Update from Directory and go to the folder where you saved the updates. Install these and AVG should be working properly again.

Apparently all those using the free AVG version 8 had this same issue on the same day.

Back in 1997 a friend of mine committed suicide. It was just a few days after his birthday and I can still remember seeing him hanging on a rope inside his house..

It's a long story but I don't want to share that for personal reasons.

I came across a blog at IF where a logo displays a link to the US suicide hotline. If only we had one of those here.. it could have saved my friend's life.

650,000 people are hospitalized each year for attempted suicide.

There was an online buzz about one of the biggest, if not the biggest, rock bands in the 1990s that alternately made me teary-eyed and caused my heart to double its beat in anticipation. I didn’t know how true it was, but, as one of the bloggers who wrote about it said, just thinking about it gave me goose bumps. My initial reaction was, “Yeah right. Keep dreaming.” After all, I know that the band in question parted bitterly—so much so that one of them didn’t even check up on his bandmate when the latter had a heart attack. But I couldn’t ignore the fact that some of the bloggers cited were sort of insiders in the music industry too.

Over the weekend, the buzz was finally confirmed, thanks to one of The Philippine STAR entertainment editor and writer Ricky Lo’s moles: the Eraserheads are going to reunite for a one night only show on August 30, 2008! The venue is supposed to be the Cultural Center of the Philippines open grounds. The other details are still sketchy, but from what I gathered during my own online sleuthing—made easy because the blog posts were careful to cite references—a corporate sponsor convinced the foursome to perform for a big event that’s supposedly free to some 35,000 expected fans.

A Blogger blog of a hardcore fan wrote an entry about his “Eraserheads Reunion Conspiracy Theory,” citing several clues, from the three E-heads’ (Raimund Marasigan, Marcus Adoro, and Buddy Zabala) visiting the University of the Philippines again with Jessica Soho to Ely Buendia’s concert in Sydney, Australia as himself, not as Pupil, where he sang Eraserheads songs like “Pare Ko,” “Maling Akala,” “Alapaap.”

One Multiply blog gave hint of the reunion on July 7, citing his “mole” as somebody who worked for the sponsoring company. According to his source, “The estranged members have been wooed since early this year and they only relented when they were offered a staggering amount of P??, 000,000.00.” The blogger also said she’s already seen the teaser posters that are going to be released soon.

Another Multiply blog posted a blind item on July 9, posting an image of a black Converse Chuck Taylor shoe as a clue. On several other succeeding updates, more clues were posted, with the last being a picture of David Lynch. In the last post, he also stressed that money was not the deciding factor.

Finally, another blog posted what seems like a teaser poster: an inverted letter E, with the numbers 83008.

Some other unconfirmed bits and pieces I picked up: tickets would be free; ticket would be on sale soon; tickets would be available for download; and the corporate sponsor has a ton of money to spend on this project (apparently, they don’t do tri-media advertising and yet lots of people buy their product).

That’s all I know, so far, but you can bet I’d be waiting to snap up some tickets as soon as they’re available—free or not. I grew up in the 1990s. In fact, I partially decided to transfer to UP because of their song “Kalayaan.” I’m not a hardcore fan—and this I know because I’ve known some—and I’ve never owned Chuck Taylors, but I do have several E-heads stories, one involving making a pretend class project, intercepting them at their That’s Entertainment guesting at Broadway Centrum, and inventing a really fun on-the-spot interview at the parking lot. There are more, but this one’s the best, my own 1990s’ “Minsan sa may…”

MY ATTORNEY

After living what I felt was a 'decent' life, my time on earth came to the end.

The first thing I remember is sitting on a bench in the waiting
room of what I thought to be a court house.

The doors opened and I was instructed to come in and have a seat
by the defense table.

As I looked around I saw the 'prosecutor.'

He was a villainous looking gent who snarled as he stared at me.

He definitely was the most evil person I have ever seen.

I sat down and looked to my left and there sat My Attorney, a kind and gentle looking man whose appearance seemed so familiar to me, I felt I knew Him.

The corner door flew open and there appeared the Judge in full
flowing robes.

He commanded an awesome presence as He moved across the room I couldn't take my eyes off of Him.

As He took His seat behind the bench, He said, 'Let us begin.'

The prosecutor rose and said,

'My name is Satan and I am here to show you why this woman belongs in hell.'

He proceeded to tell of lies that I told, things that I stole, and In the past when I cheated others Satan told of other horrible Perversions that were once in my life and the more he spoke, the further down in my seat I sank.

I was so embarrassed that I couldn't look at anyone, even my own Attorney, as the Devil told of sins that even I had completely forgotten about.

As upset as I was at Satan for telling all these things about me, I was equally upset at My Attorney who sat there silently not Offering any form of defense at all.

I know I had been guilty of those things, but I had done some good in my life - couldn't that at least equal out part of the harm I'd done?

Satan finished with a fury and said, 'This woman belongs in hell, she is guilty of all that I have charged and there is not a person who can prove otherwise.'

When it was His turn, My Attorney first asked if He might approach the bench.

The Judge allowed this over the strong objection of Satan, and beckoned Him to come forward.

As He got up and started walking, I was able to see Him in His full splendor and majesty.

I realized why He seemed so familiar; this was Jesus
representing me, my Lord and my Savior!

He stopped at the bench and softly said to the Judge, 'Hi, Dad,' and then He turned to address the court.

'Satan was correct in saying that this woman had sinned,
I won't deny any of these allegations.

And, yes, the wage of sin is death, and this woman deserves to be punished.'

Jesus took a deep breath and turned to His Father with outstretched arms and proclaimed, 'However, I died on the cross so that this person might have eternal life and she has obeyed the gospel plan of salvation,so she is Mine.'

My Lord continued with, 'Her name is written in the Book of Life,
and no one can snatch her from Me.

Satan still does not understand yet. This woman is not to be given justice, but rather mercy.'

As Jesus sat down,

He quietly paused, looked at His Father and said,
'There is nothing else that needs to be done.'

'I've done it all.'

The Judge lifted His mighty hand and slammed the gavel down.
The following words bellowed from His lips..

'This woman is free.'

The penalty for her has already been paid in full.

'Case dismissed.'

As my Lord led me away, I could hear Satan ranting and raving,
'I won't give up, I will win the next one.' I asked Jesus as He gave me my instructions where to go next, 'Have you ever lost a case?'

Christ lovingly smiled and said,

'Everyone that has come to Me and asked Me to represent them has received the same verdict as you,

~Paid In Full~

If you do not pass this along to 15 people immediately, absolutely nothing will happen.

Why We Love Kids

I haven't posted anything here for a while because I was busy with my walking world (defined as a world outside cyberspace), including my job, my family and a little bit of social life. (imagine.. i have one huh!)

Anyway, now that i signed up for DSL, let's see until where my blog addiction stops. Ha!

I found monday morning power from the peace train and i thought of reposting why we love kids.. because it simply brightened my day! and i luv to share it to as many people as possible..

1) NUDITY - I was driving with my three young children one warm summer evening when a woman in the convertible ahead of us stood up and waved. She was stark naked! As I was reeling from the shock, I heard my 5-year-old shout from the back seat, 'Mom, that lady isn't wearing a seat belt!'

2) OPINIONS - On the first day of school, a first-grader handed his teacher a note from his mother. The note read, 'The opinions expressed by this child are not necessarily those of his parents.'

3) KETCHUP - A woman was trying hard to get the ketchup out of the jar. During her struggle the phone rang so she asked her 4-year-old daughter to answer the phone. 'Mommy can't come to the phone to talk to you right now. She's hitting the bottle.'

4) MORE NUDITY - A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women's locker room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running for cover. The little boy watched in amazement and then asked, 'What's the matter, haven't you ever seen a little boy before?'

5) POLICE # 1 - While taking a routine vandalism report at an elementary school, I was interrupted by a little girl about 6 years old. Looking up and down at my uniform, she asked, 'Are you a cop? Yes,' I answered and continued writing the report. My mother said if I ever needed help I should ask the police. Is that right?' 'Yes, that's right,' I told her. 'Well, then,' she said as she extended her foot toward me, 'would you please tie my shoe?'

6) POLICE # 2 - It was the end of the day when I parked my police van in front of the station. As I gathered my equipment, my K-9 partner, Jake, was barking, and I saw a little boy staring in at me. 'Is that a dog you got back there?' he asked.'It sure is,' I replied.Puzzled, the boy looked at me and then towards the back of the van. Finally he said, 'What'd he do?'

7) ELDERLY - While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my 4-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds. She was unfailingly intrigued by t he various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs. One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, 'The tooth fairy will never believe this!'

8) DRESS-UP - A little girl was watching her parents dress for a party. When she saw her dad donning his tuxedo, she warned, 'Daddy, you shouldn't wear that suit.''And why not, darling?''You know that it always gives you a headache the next morning.'

9) DEATH - While walking along the sidewalk in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt. Apparently, his 5-year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and cotton batting, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased.The minister's son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his father always said: 'Glory be unto the Faaather, and unto the Sonnn, and into the hole he goooes.' (I want this line used at my funeral!)

10) SCHOOL - A little girl had just finished her first week of school. 'I'm just wasting my time,' she said to her mother. 'I can't read, I can't write, and they won't let me talk!'

11) BIBLE - A little boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it. What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages.'Mama, look what I found,' the boy called out.'What have you got there, dear?'With astonishment in the young boy's voice, he answered, 'I think it's Adam's underwear!'

my dead celebrity soulmate

after weeks of downloading rar files and not having enough time or simply forgetting to patch them all up in one folder, i finally finished and watched The Virigin Suicides.

now thoughts of the Lisbon girls and their tragedie lingers..

and so i couldnt sleep.. not because of thinking of the story but of how the writer was so great to have come up with this plot.

oh well so to pass the time i updated a post at my other blog, did some meme tags and looked at who last visited my blogs thru sitemeter.

i found one who posted about dead soulmates.. sounds fun enough.. so i gave it a try.. and i bet you wouldnt guess who's my dead celebrity soulmate?

Bad Days For Mary

Back in high school.. some 12 (gee!) years ago.. i used to watch them play. its been years since i last googled to find them and only ended up with one link that only contains a photo copy of their album's sleeve "Let's talk of more pleasant things".

Yesterday, Puquita, one of my oldest friends (back in freedom pad 'zine days) told me that she saw them on TV last Monday. if it were 1997, i would have hated them and used the ever popular term (back then) "sell out" for showing up on tv. but now.. woah! i nearly almost jumpped on my seat while chatting online with her! but since i was at work that day (or night, erm), i was reserved to keep my emotions inside.

below is the few lines of our short talk:

- i'm not sure.

last couple of times i saw camille, (their cute vocalist - hehe, i always loved how she wears her sexy glasses) way after bad days were in hiatus, was in a mall with her bf and we bought the same chocolate drink. then i saw her again few years after with her daughter who was wearing a cute pink dress and just got off a bus. last time i heard she was in canada.

how was irvin?

- the drummer on tv was hiding behind his hair. so not sure if it was still him.

well he always liked thurston moore. he looked bit like him too. we had the same birthday and i remembered they greeted me on the NU during the live feed of their gig at 70's bistro. it was our birthday then.

- yeah i remember! and ha! sonic youth. i miss the good old days... it was only ixan who was mostly shot by the cam.

yeah, remember the real name of ixan? (ops i wont give that out here)

- haha! cool i forgot about that! btw, mad was still there. he looked the same.

with the hair?

- yes, i think so.

oh, i remember i had a crush on him! he's a great writer. and how about bj? was he there too? and george?

- im not sure too. but i remember bj still owed us money for the zines he sold on his shop.

yeah, thats ok. a round of san mig light will do. ha!

- better yet, remembered he promised us a copy of their album?

- not sure, maybe.

i lost mine after the renovation of the house. but i managed to save the zines. i still have all of wendy says! haha and wendi's wring.. well, all, that they gave to us for free that is. hehe..

- whats that zine again about beer mug? she was the one who gave us Dredd tickets right?

yep, MUG the zine of marge. i still have them too. and that issue of my interview at wendy says, i got it from that ska zine writer from sampaloc, who bought freedom pad. actually, we just swapped issues.

Below is an email that caught my attention, sometimes in life we complain about so many things and sometimes, the more we have the more we crave for greater things. Reading that email made me pause and look around me.. and well, assured myeslf that i may not be somebody, but i know i have my senses together.

I met this man.. who at 26 have accomplished more than most 40-year olds have. He can be simply described in two words. Workaholic Geek. And that's a big compliment.

He came from a simple family, studied in the province and earned his degree and his first work there. Let's just say he had a big break at an early age, and grabbed all opportunities to learn and earn. He worked in different countries, enhancing his craft. Presently, he handles several independent projects and is employed under 3 different companies. At one of his jobs, he arrives hours before his shift and leaves at even more hours after.

Not personally knowing him tho, he's often seen untalkative but he can easily be seen smiling at anyone, firm but soft spoken, and when it comes to his duties, he's really dedicated and highly analytical.

He may have all the success anyone couldn't even imagine of attaining.. but I'm afraid he has left something important behind..

well, im not exaggerating here. but as well as they looked amazing i also wondered how could they feel being salt-water fishes and yet not living at sea?

Falling V Stars

..that's what i could call this experimental template. i think it's obvious why. i bade goodbye to my ol' messed up codes with non-working javascripts. a little colorful still, but predominantly wrapped in darkness. yeah, it should be themed 'outside' brr.. oh well, i just played with some codes and a couple of screenshots here and there.

i know my other blog needs a bit of revamp too, but since i don't post much often here i dont wanna ignore this (tho i have all the right too). i could even change the colors & html once in a while, without prior notice. hehe..

a blog revamp is similar to that of renovating, fixing or messing up one's room. i've been working on experimental templates for some weekends now. sold one to a colleague and still working on a requested one. and oh, still need to update a few more blogs. and i cant seem to finish things due to lack of time. but nonetheless, i take it one step at a time. (and i know my messy room needs attention too!) ha!

so, au revoir au vieux blog..

i hope the atmosphere here is still welcoming tho...

my only regret is.. i don't have mozilla now, and i can't check if it works with other browsers than IE pff...

St. Paul's Underground River

-A tip I have about this place-
Beware of the monkeys… running on the wild, they can identify and grab food, so don’t try to feed them. hehe.. Got to have your cams handy here. As you would even see monitor lizards and a variety of birds on the way to the cave. And while in the cave don’t look up with mouths open. hmm.. And just to be safe, don't forget to place on insect repelants before heading on.

This is a once in a lifetime experiece indeed! Unless you’re a local or just decided to come back. The 2 and a half hours road trip from Palawan’s center, Puerto Princesa, plus a 10-minute boat ride from the pier of Panaguman Beach and a few minutes walk thru the jungle is so worth it! The breath taking views and amazing rock formations, the flora and fauna.. gee… and when you finally ride that boat going in the caves, more mystery unfolds. You gotta be there to know what I mean. And make sure you have someone special with you..

Biggest Shoes in the World
"Marikina City owns the distinction of having crafted the world's largest pair of shoes, each measuring 5.5 meters long, 2.25 meters wide and 1.83 meters high. The heel alone measures 41 centimeters or 16 inches. The P2-million shoes can reportedly fit to a 37.5-meter or 125-foot giant. Around 30 people could put their feet into the colossal shoes simultaneously.

The world's largest shoes were made from materials that could produce about 250 pairs of regular-sized shoes. It reportedly took 10 shoemakers, led by Ernesto Leano, 77 days to cut 30 square meters of leather for the upper lining and 7.4 square meters for the socklining. Also used were 250 kilograms of vegetable tanned leather for the insole, 270 kilograms for the outsole, 80 kilograms for the welt, 225 kilograms of adhesive and 1,000 meters of thread for 200,000 stitches.

What a masterpiece indeed! And I am privileged to live near Marikina to see such great creation set in a picturesque river and sky with a view of mountains on the horizon. Observe the floating shoe on the river.. and the trick here is to catch a glimpse of that albino cow.

Restock. A brilliant 23 track compilation of the Brazilian Bossa Nova star Nara Leao. The cliche about Nara Leao was that she was "the muse of bossa nova." As a teenager in the late 'Fifties, she opened up her parents

house as a salon for the movers and shakers of the early bossa nova scene - Tom Jobim, Joao Gilberto and others to hang out in. In the early sixties, as bossa nova exploded internationally, Nara rose to stardom. Soft and sweet, moody and sensuous, she performed pop and beautiful samba and bossa standards and established her reputation as one of the outstanding talents of her generation. She toured Japan, Brazil and France with Sergio Menzies and returned to record political songs that were critical of Brazil's prevailing military junta. Nara's catalogue of recordings are so magical, of such a consistently high standard, they are sacrosanct in Brazil. this compilation concentrates on recordings made in 1967 her absolute best period. Nara Leao has more recently began to cultivate an audience in Japan where like Astrud Gilberto, Elis Regina and Claudine Longet her sweetness strikes a real chord. All Tomorrow's Parties: Nico Live dvd $19.49

A brand new, previously unseen DVD featuring one of the great all-time rock music icons - Nico. One of the most fascinating figures of rock's fringes, Nico hobnobbed, worked, and was romantically linked with an incredible assortment of the most legendary entertainers of the '60s.

Nico first rose to fame as a European supermodel, also landing a bit part in Fellini's La Dolce Vita film. In the mid-1960's she moved to New York, where Andy Warhol installed her as a vestigial presence and occasional lead singer for the Velvet Underground. The band never really accepted her as a bona fide member and she departed in 1967, but not before contributing unforgettable deadpan vocals to three of the songs on their classic 1967 debut album. Nico embarked on a solo career, recording folk-rock-flavored songs for her debut Chelsea Girl album with assistance from Jackson Browne, Lou Reed, and John Cale. Her 1969 follow-up, The Marble Index, was a dramatic departure that unveiled her doom-laden, gothic persona, produced by Cale and prominently featuring her deep vocals, impenetrable lyrics, and ghostly harmonium. Her subsequent '70s albums explored much the same territory, with assistance from Cale and influential art rockers like Brian Eno. She fought a constant struggle with a massive drug habit and tangled personal life and eventually died of a cerebral hemorrhage in Ibiza in 1988. The original goth rocker, Nico's albums are demanding and bleak, but map a unique and starkly powerful vision that has become more influential with age. "All Tomorrow's Parties" features extremely rare material from two shows Nico played in the UK in the early 1980's.

STONE ROSES
Stone Roses LP $22.99

Red vinyl. The color vinyl was originally issued in 1989. The Stone Roses eponymously titled debut album is now regarded as the defining release of the late 80's early 90's 'Madchester' music scene.

Byrdsian jangly guitar pop songs are injected with the attitude of The Rolling Stones. It includes the singles 'She Bangs The Drums', 'Made Of Stone' and 'I Am The Resurrection'. Among my fave is the classic I Wanna Be Adored.

I am the Resurrection and I am the light... I couldn’t ever bring myself to hate you as I’d like (always wondered who was saying these lines... JHC? hmm... lol!)

Remember those times when you color your hair green, you don't listen to adults, you either cut class or totally quit school, you run away from home and you thought you can tour the world with your skateboard, while your music is all that you have and you don't even have a penny in your pocket? That time when your world revolves over booze, weed, protests and concerts? And you thought nobody but your friends understood you, and everybody else is your enemy? hmm.. i do.. LOL! Those were the days... ha! Question is, have you grown?

Starbucks in Tagaytay City, at sunset, minutes before the sun totally gets envelpoed by the night sky.

Tagaytay is about 55 kilometers from Manila. It sits at a high point of 640 meters above sea level, which provides the perfect view of Taal Volcano and Taal Lake.

Best to take a coffee trip while looming over the view.

Went here some weeks ago. Too bad when we settled into our seats, it was dark and I wsn't able to take pics of Taal. Anyway, there is always next time.

"I will carry you in my arms until we are old"

On my wedding day, I carried my wife in my arms. The bridal car stopped in front of our one-room flat. My buddies insisted that I carry her out of the car in my arms. So I carried her into our home. She was then plump and shy. I was a strong and happy bridegroom.

This was the scene of ten years ago.

The following days were as simple as a cup of pure water: we had a kid; I went into business and tried to make more money. When the assets were steadily increasing, the affections between us seemed to ebb.

She was a civil servant. Every morning we left home together and got home almost at the same time. Our kid was studying in a boarding school. Our marriage life seemed to be enviably happy. But the calm life was more likely to be affected by unpredictable changes.

Dew came into my life. It was a sunny day. I stood on a spacious balcony. Dew hugged me from behind. My heart once again was immersed in her stream of love.

This was the apartment I bought for her. Dew said, you are the kind of man who best draws girls' eyeballs. Her words suddenly reminded me of my wife.
When we just married, my wife said, Men like you, once successful, will be very attractive to girls. Thinking of this, I became somewhat hesitant. I knew I had betrayed my wife.

But I couldn't help doing so. I moved Dew's hands aside and said, you go to select some furniture, O.K.? I've got something to do in the company.

Obviously she was unhappy, because I had promised her to go and see with her. At the moment, the idea of divorce became clearer in my mind although it used to be something impossible to me. However, I found it rather difficult to tell my wife about it. No matter how mildly I mentioned it to her, she would be deeply hurt. Honestly, she was a good wife.

Every evening she was busy preparing dinner. I was sitting in front of the TV. The dinner was ready soon. Then we watched TV together. Or, I was lounging before the computer, visualizing Dews body. This was the means of my entertainment.

One day I said to her in a slight joking way, suppose we divorce, what will you do? She stared at me for a few seconds without a word. Apparently she believed that divorce was something too far away from her.

I couldn't imagine how she would react once she got to know I was serious. When my wife went to my office, Dew had just stepped out. Almost all the staff looked at my wife with a sympathetic eye and tried to hide something while talking with her. She seemed to have got some hint.

She gently smiled at my subordinates. But I read some hurt in her eyes. Once again, Dew said to me, He Ning, divorce her, O.K.? Then we live together. I nodded.

I knew I could not hesitate any more. When my wife served the last dish, I held her hand. I've got something to tell you, I said. She sat down and ate quietly. Again I observed the hurt in her eyes. Suddenly I didn't know how to my mouth. But I had to let her know what I was thinking. I want to divorce. I raised a serious topic calmly. She didn't seem to be much annoyed by my words, instead she asked me softly, why? I'm serious.

I avoided her question. This so-called answer turned her angry. She threw away the chopsticks and shouted at me, you are not a man!

At that night, we didn't talk to each other. She was weeping. I knew she wanted to find out what had happened to our marriage. But I could hardly give her a satisfactory answer, because my heart had gone to Dew.

With a deep sense of guilt, I drafted a divorce agreement which stated that she could own our house, our car, and 30% stake of my company. She glanced at it and then tore it into pieces. I felt a pain in my heart.

The woman who had been living ten years with me would become a stranger one day. But I could not take back what I had said.

Finally she cried loudly in front of me, which was what I had expected to see.
To me her cry was actually a kind of release. The idea of divorce which had stressed me for several weeks seemed to be firmer and clearer.

A late night, I came back home after entertaining my clients. I saw her writing something at the table. I fell asleep fast. When I woke up, I found she was still there. I turned over and was asleep again.

She brought up her divorce conditions: she didn't want anything from me, but
I was supposed to give her one month s time before divorce, and in the month's time we must live as normal life as possible.

Her reason was simple: our son would finish his summer vacation a month later and she didn't want him to see our marriage was broken. She passed me the agreement she drafted, and then asked me, He Ning, do you still remember how I entered our bridal room on the wedding day?

This question suddenly brought back all those wonderful memories to me. I nodded and said, I remember.

You carried me in your arms, she continued, so, I have a requirement, that is, you carry me out in your arms on the day when we divorce. From now to the end of this month, you must carry me out from the bedroom to the door every morning.

I accepted with a smile. I knew she missed those sweet days and wished to end her marriage with a romantic form.

I told Dew about my wife s divorce conditions. She laughed loudly and thought it was absurd. No matter what tricks she does, she has to face the result of divorce, she said scornfully. Her words more or less made me feel uncomfortable.

My wife and I hadn't had any body contact since my divorce intention was explicitly expressed. We even treated each other as a stranger. So when I carried her out for the first day, we both appeared clumsy. Our son clapped behind us, daddy is holding mummy in his arms. His words brought me a sense of pain.

From the bedroom to the sitting room, then to the door, I walked over ten meters with her in my arms. She closed her eyes and said softly, Let us start from today, don't tell our son. I nodded, feeling somewhat upset. I put her down outside the door.

She went to wait for bus, I drove to office.

On the second day, both of us acted much more easily. She leaned on my chest. We were so close that I could smell the fragrance of her blouse. I realized that I hadn't looked at this intimate woman carefully for a long time. I found she was not young any more. There were some fine wrinkles on her face.

On the third day, she whispered to me, the outside garden is being demolished. Be careful when you pass there.

On the fourth day, when I lifted her up, I seemed to feel that we were still an intimate couple and I was holding my sweetheart in my arms. The visualization of Dew became vaguer.

On the fifth and sixth day, she kept reminding me something, such as, where she put the ironed shirts, I should be careful while cooking, etc.

I nodded. The sense of intimacy was even stronger. I didn't tell Dew about this.

I felt it was easier to carry her. Perhaps the everyday workout made me stronger. I said to her, it seems not difficult to carry you now.

She was picking her dresses. I was waiting to carry her out. She tried and tried a few but could not find a suitable one.

Then she sighed, all my dresses have grown fatter. I smiled. But I suddenly realized that it was because she was thinner that I could carry her more easily, not because I was stronger.

I knew she had buried all the bitterness in her heart. Again, I felt a sense of pain. Subconsciously I reached out a hand to touch her head. Our son came in at the moment. Dad, it s time to carry mum out. He said.
To him, seeing his father carrying his mother out had been an essential part of his life. She gestured our son to come closer and hugged him tightly.

I turned my face because I was afraid I would change my mind at the last minute. I held her in my arms, walking from the bedroom, through the sitting room, to the hallway. Her hand surrounded my neck softly and naturally. I held her body tightly, as if we came back to our wedding day.
But her much lighter weight made me sad.

On the last day, when I held her in my arms I could hardly move a step. Our son had gone to school. She said, actually I hope you will hold me in your arms until we are old.

I held her tightly and said, both you and I didn't notice that our life was lacking of such intimacy.

I jumped out of the car swiftly without locking the door. I was afraid any delay would make me change my decision. I walked upstairs. Dew opened the door. I said to her, Sorry, Dew, I won t divorce. I'm serious.

She looked at me, astonished. The she touched my forehead. You got no fever. She said. I moved her hand off my head. Sorry, Dew, I said, I can only say sorry to you, I won t divorce.

My marriage life was boring probably because she and I didn't value the details of life, not because we didn't love each other any more. Now I understand that since I carried her into the home, she gave birth to our child, I am supposed to hold her until I am old. So I have to say sorry to you.

Dew seemed to suddenly wake up. She gave me a loud slap and then slammed the door and burst into cry.

I walked downstairs and drove to the office. When I passed the floral shop on the way, I ordered a bouquet for my wife which was her favorite.

The salesgirl asked me to write the greeting words on the card. I smiled and wrote, I'll carry you out every morning until we are old.

The following was written by INTEL General Manager Robin Martin about the Philippines:

Filipinos (including the press, business people and myself) tend to dwell
too much on the negative side, and this affects the perception of
foreigners, even the ones who have lived here for a while. The negative
perception of the Philippines is way disproportionate to reality when
compared to countries like Columbia, Egypt, Middle East, Africa, etc.

Let us all help our country by balancing the negative with the positive
especially when we talk to foreigners, whether based here or abroad.

Looking back and comparing the Philippines today and 1995 (the year I came
back), I was struck by how much our country has progressed physically.

Consider the following:

1. The great telecom infrastructure that we have now did not exist in
1995. 1995 was the year the telecom industry was deregulated. Since then
billions of dollars have been invested in both fixed line and cellular
networks producing a system with over 5,000 kms of fiber optic backbone at
a world competitive cost. From a fixed line capacity of about 900,000 in
1995 we now have over 7 million. Cellular phones practically did not exist
in 1995; now we have over 11 million line capacity.

2. The MRT, many of the EDSA flyovers (including the Ayala Avenue

23 years) doing back-up office work to their Asian operations including

the Asia-Pacific region here in Manila, CITIBANK also does its global ATM
programming locally.

10. This is the first year ever that the Philippines will be exporting
cars in quantity courtesy of FORD Philippines.

11. The government is shedding off graft and corruption slowly but surely.
This is the first time in our history that a former president is in jail
and facing charges of plunder. Despite all odds, we are still pursuing the
ill-gotten wealth of Marcos now enjoyed by his unrepentant heirs.

"The Eye of God" ?

Surfing through BlogExplosion, i came across chasing the moon (trackback) that featured this. The owner didnt mention any link, as she claims it only came from a forwarded mail. So, here my investigative insticts drove me to find out more.

i immediately went to Astronomy Picture of the Day to search for this so called "eye". And found out this is a real capture, from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, of the Helix Nebula that showed on May 10,2003.

Facts: The Helix Nebula is the closest example of a planetary nebula created at the end of the life of a Sun-like star. A planetary nebula is gas around what used to be a star much like our sun.

The outer gasses of the star expelled into space appear from our vantage point as if we are looking down a helix. The remnant central stellar core, destined to become a white dwarf star, glows in light so energetic it causes the previously expelled gas to fluoresce. Although, a close-up of the inner edge of the Helix Nebula shows complex gas knots of unknown origin.

Fable: This does not occur only once every 3,000 years as other rumors imply. The circulating mail that started back in 2003 says the scientists called this "the eye of God" and a chain-reaction of comments have been added.

Puzzled Scientists: A similar case happened back in February 9,1996. Where the Eye of an Hourglass Nebula was discovered. Although it left a puzzling thought to the scientists.

First, the axis of this central region does not line up well with the outer hourglass structure. Next, the hot star (the white spot to the left of center) which ejected this gaseous nebula as it evolved towards its white dwarf phase, is not exactly at the center of the "eye".

These unexpected results leave astronomers looking for the missing pieces of the ejection process that created this unusual and beautiful structure.

Perhaps, there is somebody out there.. it may or may not be God, but whatever is out there that any human-made technology cannot explain.. is only left to our imaginations...

Yesterday, October 3rd, the moon moved in front of the sun producing a solar eclipse, but it wasn't total, rather annular, because the apparent size of the moon isn't big enough to completely cover the sun. Another consideration: this was only visible from Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Checkout Shadow & Substance's website for some more information.

Well, missed it this time, but there will be a partial lunar eclipse on October 17th. Here shows the map of countries which will see this partial eclipse. Europe and Africa will not, but most of North America and Asia, the Pacific and Australia will. Maximum eclipse occurs at 12:03 UT or 7:03am, CDT. Eastern US will only see part of it. And hmm.. hmm.. i will be able to see a complete eclipse.. that is if its not gonna rain!

So news blitz again by then! Maybe i can capture an image too hmmm... very fascinating idea of watching this simultaneously across the globe... 8)

Blog hopping, i just found out that...



iPod has a dirty little secret. Found a video of guys who recorded a phone call to the iPod helpdesk. They wanted to know what they should do now that their iPod's battery stopped working after 18 months. It turns out you can't get or buy a separate new battery. So the advice from the helpdesk was: "Just buy a new iPod".

So... that's why they keep selling so much of them, you apparently have to replace them every year and a half! The rest of the film you see them walking on the streets and spray painting a warning on every iPod ad they see.

As i assumed before, iPods use a Ni-MH battery, which is a Lithium Ion battery that you get in most laptops and better mobile phones (like all Nokia phones). To maximize its life, you need to go through several full recharge cycles from time to time - basically, running the device until the battery is flat, switching it off, charging it up fully, switching it on, running it down, and so on for a few times.

Found out that iPods do use Li-Ion batteries, which are more expensive than rechargable ni_MH batteries, but asking over $250 for a new battery is madness, especially considering that most other battery powered devices have easily replacable batteries. You can buy new Nokia batteries quite cheaply from a wide range of places.

Strangely tho, looking into this fact about iPods, i found that iPodBattery.com sells batteries for both the old and new iPod models for $49 (about Php2,750 / 40Euros) and AC adaptors that let you plug it in to the mains instead of your computer.

My keyboards plug were distroyed by an assh* who attempted to get rid of my whole PC! When he realized he cannot unplug the monitor (*cough.. stu... *cough.. pid!) he gave up and ranted and shouted all possible curses ever invented instead. When he finally left, i found out he pulled the keyb plug the wrong way! the little wires were dislocated from where it should be. actually i do not know if ill get mad or laugh of his erm... lol!

Well that happened months ago.. but since i cannot find a sincere store who could sell me only the plug (everybody else insisted me to replace the whole thing! tssk.. well my black keyb just happend to be paired with my Logitech optical mouse and its stil working fine so why replace it?) I grabbed the keyb of my sister's old PC since she already has a laptop and is seldom home anyway.

But today, for some unknown reason she needed her PC... ok im not mean anyway it was hers so i have no choice but to return it. And here i am tssk typing with the On-Screen keyboard that comes with Win XP. brr... well come to think of it, im getting a hang of it now. (talk about desperation!)

And my ISP suddenly stopped providing internet connection. Redialed. "Access Denied". WTF! pre-paid ran out? no way! its 100 hours! it harly felt i even reached 50! oh... breathe... i know i have a spare one in my bag. hmmm cool! found it! Called the tech support. yeah! there was a catch. 100 hours only in 14 days and weekends count! but you cannot use the card unless its 5am to 5pm Mondays to Fridays only!! grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

And today my banners were denied at Blog Explosipn Sniiiiifff!! and i worked hard for those tssk. well the "Admin" said there were pop ups in this blog. Firefox of course blocks it. Although I'm using both Firefox Mozilla and Internet Explorer! I even use Maxthon! i wonder why i havent seen any? is it the cookies? tssk i need a techie here! anyway he was asking what was the wtf's about. Sorry i was mean BE! Look at me.. i have noo keyboards!!! and my ISP pre-paid connection ran out!! Now, would you still give me some MCs (Mystery Credits)?

He claims it must have been the shoutbox/Tagboard. Well i dunno... LWS recommended it and everybody else is not complaining about it. maybe its the add-ons here. ok then gone gone gone be gone! no more stupid add ons.. (lol!) Wish My Moogie Mentor is here...
